He completed his undergraduate studies at Columbia University in New York City in 1986 and received his medical degree from Albany Medical College in New York in 1993. He then completed an internship and a residency in general surgery at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York, where he had the honor of being surgical chief resident.
After his residency, Dr. Sofer moved away from New York to continue his training in plastic and reconstructive surgery with a fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
