Knowledge accumulated over time, is experience. Gaining from it is wisdom. Over the years we have held on to some time honored principles in plastic surgery, modified and updated a few, and completely abandoned others. It is customary for us to recommend procedures to our patients that we would also recommend to members of my own family.
When we are asked about complications of plastic surgery, we usually go through the commonly described ones, but the one that we always emphasize, especially regarding facial surgery, is the "operated look".With the exception of our hands, the only other area not covered with clothing is the face. Assuming everybody can see if a person had facial surgery, should that be considered a good result?
Having said that, we are fully cognizant of the time it takes an individual to recover from such extensive surgery, so labeling somebody as have the "look" should also be judged fairly, and not before healing is complete, which may take months or longer. We are constantly striving to find a better way, a new method of doing a particular procedure which will help my patients look and feel the best they can.
